27th SGC DISSOLVED, SEC CONSTITUTED

Following the dissolution of the 27th Students Governing Council (SGC) of Moi University last week on Friday, a purely political mood has taken over the atmosphere in the campus.

This is clearly evident in the way posters, flyers, and banners of aspirants have decorated the academic highway, at the student center, in the hostels, on the trees mention them. The aspirants together with their supporters have started strategizing in the campaigns by moving from hostel to hostel, room to room and class from class to solicit for votes. Vuvuzelas have become the order of the day in their campaigns breaking the peace of the atmosphere as they chant songs and slogans of their favorite candidates.

Mean while the SEC (Student Election Committee) has already been constituted to oversee the elections which are to be held on 22nd of August, just a week to end of semester exams. SEC is a body that is independent composed of senior students in the campus which is charged with the responsibility of organizing and managing the election process. The student governing body is composed of the following dockets: chairperson, vice chair, secretary general, assistant secretary general, security and accommodation, academics, finance, health, catering, entertainment and communication, sports.

According to majority of the students, they have expressed a lot of dissatisfaction in the 26th SGC terming the leaders too selfish and extravagant. Citing the example of the outgoing secretary general Nathaniel Akadima who is alleged to have gone to Ghana for two weeks for personal affairs. Other s who has been accused of extravagant are George Bush and Peter Baraza outgoing vice chair and assistant sec gen respectively. They are alleged to have bought a motorbike out of the MUSO treasury, which they are using to generate extra cash through transport service, boda boda.

For the first time in history of Moi University a lady is vying for the chairperson’s docket. Annabelle Wangari is the only lady in the race for the top seat. She is competing with other six gentlemen for the same seat. It would be greater history if at all Annabelle clinches the top seat to become the first lady to head MUSO.

Even as campaigns intensify, the contestants have been urged to run their campaigns peacefully and to desist from making statements that might cause chaos during and after the election period.
